Backpacking in Kronotsky Preserve

Hike over the Central Kamchatka Mountain Range into the Kronotsky Preserve. Kronotsky one of the oldest preserved territories in Russia was chartered in the 19th century. Set aside to protect the rich sable population, the "soft gold" of Siberia and the Russian Far East, the Preserve has only recently opened a limited number of hiking routes to visitors. The Kronotsky Preserve protects 1,007,134 hectares of land along the central Pacific coast of the Peninsula. The Preserve represents a unique fund of Kamchatka's flora, fauna, and unique geological formations. Here one finds Pacific coastal habitat, many rivers and the largest lake on Kamchatka, Kronotsky. The fantastic Uzon Caldera, formed over 10,000 years ago and covers a 9 x 15 km basin.


Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival on Kamchatka, airport greeting and transfer to Explore Kamchatka's bed and breakfast in Yelizovo just 15 minutes from the airport. Meet your guide and go over the trip plan, looking at maps.

Day 2 Drive 300 km by 6 WD bus to the village of Milkovo. Visit the museum, which has an interesting collection of early Kamchatka historical artifacts. Drive another 30 km to the Kirganik River and set up camp. Overnight in tents, double accommodations.

Day 3
Hike 26 km to the Kitildin River. This follows trails first used by Cossack hunters who trapped sable. Camp.

Day 4
Hike to the Osipovskaya River 8 km, camp.

Day 5
Hike to the Three Streams glade 19 km, camp.

Day 6
Hike to the Pravaya Zupanova River pass 19 km and camp.

Day 7
Hike to Pedestal Mountain 18 km, camp.

Day 8
Hike to the Siny Dol, 20 km and camp.

Day 9
Hike 8 km to the Uzon Caldera and explore the caldera area, camp.

Day 10
Hike to the Sestrenka River 1.5 km from the Valley of Geysers. Camping isn't allowed within the valley so you'll make camp here and explore the Valley from this base.

Day 11
Excursion to the Valley of Geysers.

Day 12
Hike 24 km to the Shumnaya River toward the Pacific Ocean. 24 km. Camp

Day 13
Helicopter pick up at the Shumnaya River and return to Yelizovo. Overnight at Explore Kamchatka's bed and breakfast.

Day 14
Reserve day in case of non-flying weather. Relaxation, visit Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky or Paratunka hot springs spa area.

Day 15
Departure day.

Included: Invitation and voucher for receiving your visa, all in-Kamchatka ground transportation, satellite phone for emergency purposes, airport transfers, guide, interpreter, in-town meals, and accommodations.

Not included: Visa, international or trans-Russian airline flights, food while on the trail unless requested, alcohol, tips, and travel insurance. Also not included are your backpack, tent, sleeping bag, pad, personal dish and cup, eating utensil, personal first aid and toiletries kit.
